The common Oregano is an exquisite spontaneous aromatic plant widely used on a culinary and medicinal level both fresh and dried. Typically Mediterranean, it was already known at the time of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, it was considered a symbol of peace and happiness so much so that the spouses wore it on their wedding day as a sign of good luck, its etymology seems to mean "delight of the mountain".

The Oregano plant creates a small shrub that blooms all summer and the fragrant flowers are purplish in color. Its natural environment is hilly and mountainous with good sun exposure and moist soil. It continues to give off a pleasant smell and aroma even when dried.

On a medicinal level, the leaves rich in phenols are used to stimulate digestion while on a culinary level the use of this aromatic herb is almost infinite, it is used to flavor vegetables, meats, salads, cheeses, fish, sauces and is indispensable above all on pizza . A simple dish to prepare with oregano is bruschetta with tomato and olives.

It can be easily grown both in pots and in the garden, it is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows practically everywhere below 2,000 meters above sea level. Sowing takes place from the end of February to May, be careful not to confuse Oregano with Marjoram which is a close relative, the harvest takes place when the plant is in flower, i.e. from June to September, when it releases all the best aromas . Once collected, the leaves can be kept fresh in the fridge or dried.
