The Treviso Red Chicory / Radicchio Rosso di Treviso, is a variety of chicory characterized by an intense dark red colour, white streaks, a crunchy texture and an unmistakable, delicately bitter taste. This Chicory is rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, B1 and B2 and it's very popular in Nord Italy.

It is sown directly in the field or in a seedbed with universal soil in June, July, August, then it can be brought into the open field in rows about 30 cm apart.

The cultivation of Red Chicory Treviso is the result of a tradition that dates back over the centuries. Some iconographic research conducted by Tiziano Tempesta of the University of Padua has shown that Radicchio was already cultivated in the mid-sixteenth century. It can be seen represented in some paintings such as "The Wedding at Cana" by Leandro da Ponte known as Il Bassano (today in the Louvre Museum in Paris). But the production process would only be refined in the second half of the 19th century. It would have been the nurseryman Francesco Van Den Borre, who came from Belgium in 1870 to create a patrician garden, to bring the bleaching technique already in use for Belgian chicory to his property in Dosson, in the Treviso area. It was in the year 1900 that the red radicchio of Treviso reached its consecration with the creation under the Loggia dei Grani in Piazza dei Signori in Treviso of the first exhibition dedicated to the producers of the red radicchio of Treviso and commissioned by the agronomist of Lombard origin, Giuseppe Benzi.
