Pumpkin Long Gourd Sicilia

The Pumpkin Long Gourd Sicilia is known by various names including: Sicilian Snake Pumpkin, Cucozza, Cucuzzella, Legenary Pumpkin, Long or Longa Pumpkin. It is a climbing plant that starts growing in March / April, it is known for producing elongated fruits that in cultivation hang from top to bottom due to gravity, if instead they are left on the ground, without hanging them, they will take a shape twisted to make them look like large snakes. The fruits, also called Zucchini, are narrow a few centimeters in diameter and over 1 meter long, but can also reach record sizes of 2 or 3 meters. It adapts well to any type of soil but prefers sandy and light ones and must be watered with abundant irrigation.

It is widely used in typical South Italian Cuisine: Sicily, Cilento and Napoli to make Soups and Pasta, it is also eaten with sea urchins and various vegetables. The best time to eat it is when it is about 40 centimeters long, if it is grown more then it is woody.
