The Edelweiss is the queen of the Alps, a symbol of Resilience, Courage and Eternal Youth. The Edelweiss is the national flower of Switzerland, where it is called Edelweiss, which means "Noble White", in addition to being the Swiss national flower, it is also the flower depicted in the coat of arms of the Italian Workers' Excursionists Union (U.O.E.I.) and in Italy it is from time the symbol of the alpine flora. The "Leontopodium Alpinum" is a popular mountain flower belonging to the Asteraceae family, the scientific name comes from the Greek lèon = lion and podion = foot. The translation, therefore, turns out to be "lion's foot", it is currently a protected plant, in fact this delicate flower, living in quite extreme environments, as well as being already rare in itself, has been made the object of an indiscriminate collection even just for having it as souvenirs. In the Alps, for example, a specific regulation has come to be dictated: The prohibition of collecting edelweiss, otherwise a fine is foreseen, so why not try to cultivate them on the terrace even if not at high altitude?

What appears as a single flower is actually a complex structure: the real flowers are very small, gathered to form 5-8 small central flower heads (inflorescences), of a greenish yellow colour; and what appear to be the petals are actually woolly white floral leaves, radiant like a star. The plant is about 10 cm tall and blooms in the summer months, producing yellowish and greenish flowers composed of a minimum number of 2 to a maximum of 10 flower heads. The stem is erect.

It is sown from February to April.

If you want to place it in the ground, choose a well-drained soil, combined with sand and gravel. If, on the other hand, you have a rock garden, you can plant it directly there. Place the edelweiss in a bright place, but away from direct rain. This flower tolerates low winter temperatures and frosts, so it doesn't need to be repaired when the bad season arrives. If you live in hot areas, be careful to choose a semi-shady spot for half of the day. The plant fears water stagnation, therefore a couple of waterings a week will be sufficient. If you prefer to grow the edelweiss in pots you will need to be more careful. First choose a pot with a diameter of about 20 cm. Every year, in spring, repot it in a slightly larger container, at least for the first 3 years. In these steps, never break the clod of soil that surrounds the roots. Then you can repot every couple of years if needed. Always water sparingly, always making sure the soil is dry.

This flower, in addition to having a high ornamental value, has numerous properties and is used in herbal medicine. In fact it is rich in mineral salts, tannins, flavonoids and phytosterols. It acts as an antioxidant and exerts an astringent action on the skin. Precisely for this reason we often find its essential components in moisturizing and anti-aging cosmetics. It also helps keep ultraviolet rays at bay. In traditional medicine it helps relieve rheumatism and cough symptoms. It is also one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories and a good antibacterial.

The flowers are often dried to create compositions and pictures. Just pick them up and leave them in the absorbent paper. They will retain all their splendor.

A sachet of this wonder contains +50 Seeds which will be enough to fill a couple of planters.
