Mutant Candlelight Pepper

The Mutant Candlelight is a very rare chilli with thread-like leaves, probably the strangest, most curious and rare chilli in the world. It is in fact considered a plant by collectors with no culinary value, it is edible but is considered only on an ornamental level.

The Mutant Candlelight Red Pepper derives from a particular mutation of a Capsicum annuum, namely the Candlelight Red, which generates plants with cotyledons, leaves and thread-like flower petals. This mutation, due to the FILIFORM gene, can occur in any Capsicum therefore there may also be other varieties with different characteristics affected by this mutation.

The plant is very compact, an adult specimen has a height of 20 - 25 cm and 30 cm in width. It develops ramifications from the base and at the apex of each branch there are groups of leaves from which flowers and fruit clusters will then arise. The leaves of the Mutant Candlelight are a few millimeters wide and on average 5 cm long. The flowers are white and have all the typical characteristics of Capsicum Annuum flowers except for the shape of the petals which are thin and long. Most of the fruits are Parthenocarpic, that is, without seeds, small in size and irregular in shape, on average only one fruit in 10 contains some seeds, from this we can deduce the absolute rarity of this plant which is considered a plant for collectors. The spiciness is irregular, in some cases it is not perceptible while in others it is light, generally around 10,000 Shu. However, this characteristic is irrelevant as it is an ornamental plant for collectors without any culinary value.

The plants that demonstrate this mutation appear to be particularly resistant both to the cold with temperatures close to 0, and to scorching heat and drought, which is also why it is believed to be native to the Maghreb desert.
