The Datterino Tomato is a variety of Asian origin whose fruits have a small and elongated shape, the skin is bright red, the pulp is firm and not very watery. The Datterino shares with the Red Cherry Tomato the bright and glossy red color and the bunches in the shape of a herringbone, the shape is however more elongated, oval, each fruit weighs from 20 to 40 grams. Juicy and fragrant, the datterino tomato has a very balanced sweet-acid taste, particularly pleasant and more sugary than other tomato varieties. Its pulp is soft and firm and keeps cooking well, ideal both in hot preparations and preserves, and in salads and cold pasta dishes. Before use it should be kept in the fridge and can also be frozen in tightly closed plastic bags. Healthy and digestible, it is suitable for diets because it contains few calories and is rich in nutrients and natural antioxidants.

The ideal soil for growing this tomato variety is fresh, rich in organic matter, well drained, located in a sunny position but protected from the wind. It is very important to work the soil deeply, to ensure the seedlings have the right degree of humidity in the event of a particularly dry climate; in order to avoid harmful water stagnations, a part of sand or clay can be added to the soil. Furthermore, it is advisable to enrich the substrate with organic fertilizer and ensure the seedlings have an abundant quantity of good quality soil in which to take root... therefore the usual rules that apply to almost all tomatoes.

The sowing of the datterino tomato must take place in a period of the year in which the climate is not too harsh, therefore it is preferable to start sowing in spring. Once the seedlings are born from the Seeds, cuttings can then be created to have more plants. From the end of March to the beginning of April it is possible to proceed with planting in the field or in a 10-20 liter capacity pot on the terrace.

If necessary, supports can be installed to help the seedlings develop or even a moderate pruning of the axillary shoots can be carried out. The harvest can begin, as a guideline, 60 days after transplanting or, in any case, when the fruit has taken on a bright red colour.

Although rather resistant to disease, this tomato variety is subject to contracting tracheomycosis and bacteriosis, pathologies that seriously compromise the quality of the fruit.

Cryptogamic diseases are very frequent, such as downy mildew, caused by a fungus (Phytophthora infestans): to prevent its attack on the seedlings, it is absolutely necessary to avoid the formation of water stagnations in the soil and give the good old Coppery !
