Capsicum Frutescens

Capsicum Frutescens

The Capsicum Frutescens is one of the 5 main Species of the Capsicum Genus, which includes Bell Peppers and Chillies. Within the Capsicum Frutescens species, the variability of color and shape of the fruits is low, unlike the others. It is grown mainly in the Tabasco variety, to make the homonymous Tabasco Sauce.

Capsicum Frutenscens is an upright shrub, similar to a small tree, 0.5 to 2 meters tall in the countries of origin, with lanceolate, green leaves. The flowers, with a greenish-white corolla, single, with purple stamens, with 5 - 7 petals, appear at the axil of the leaves, one or more per node, in summer. The fruit is a berry, green in color at the beginning, with colors of the ripe fruit from red-orange to purple, passing through the various shades of yellow, orange and red.
